Professor Simon Redfern

Prof Simon Redfern is a mineralogist. His work is focused on developing and testing models that relate the properties of environmental materials across many length scales as a function of temperature, pressure and chemical composition. Nature provides invaluable clues to guide the synthesis and exploration of technologically useful materials, as well as a testing ground for their long term behaviour. For example, the potential of high-P/T synthesis via metastable precursors provides a route for the development of clay minerals and novel refractory oxides relevant to the problems of chemical and nuclear waste disposal. He uses neutron and X-ray techniques to explore the behaviour of such materials in potential repository environments.
