Visiting the Idaho and Oak Ridge National Laboratories in the US

At the site of the world’s first nuclear power plant

CDT Students from cohort 2 visited Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The purpose of the visit was to learn more about world-leading nuclear-related research programmes, to see the facilities, and experience the working environment in a different country. The visit promotes a global outlook on the nuclear sector and students were offered an insight into research and career opportunities in the US.

CDT student, Zi Liang Tan shares with us a short review of the trip:

Earlier this year in September, I visited Idaho National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US as part of the CDT program. It was an amazing experience to be granted an inside-look at the depth and scope of the science happening within these national labs, and to chat and learn from the dedicated people running the labs.

The most exciting highlights of the trip were the research reactors: the Transient Reactor Test Facility and Advanced Test Reactor in INL; and the High Flux Isotope Reactor in ORNL. Getting to visit such unique reactors and understanding their role in large-scale science was very inspiring and these perspectives I gained have greatly influenced my outlook on research and my future career.
