Professor Ian Farnan

Professor Ian Farnan

Ian Farnan is Professor of Earth and Nuclear Materials in the Department of Earth Sciences. He is also a Tutor and Fellow of Clare Hall.

Specialisms

Professor Farnan’s research interests range from developing a fundamental understanding of the effect of temperature and additives on the structure and dynamics of fluoride and chloride molten salts to the effects of radiation and water on nuclear materials from waste forms to fuels. This research has been facilitated through the nuclearisation and use of state-of-the-art analytical instruments, novel isotope-specific techniques and modelling.

As part of CNEC activities, Professor Farnan is involved with understanding the barriers to greater deployment of nuclear technology in reducing the carbon emissions to achieve climate goals.
