Understanding the long-term evolution and performance of High Heat Generating Wastes (HHGW) in disposal conditions is a key consideration in the delivery of the UK’s Geological Disposal Facility (GDF).

There is a growing community of researchers funded by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and academic institutes in the UK.

This conference aims to bring together students, academics and industry experts from across the UK with leading international experts to share their research and develop new collaborations.

This year’s workshop is the second in this pursuit and builds on the success of the first meeting held at the University of Huddersfield in 2022. The second meeting has expanded to be co-organised by the University of Cambridge and the University of Huddersfield. It is being financially supported by Nuclear Waste Services, EPSRC and organising universities.

Topics

The 2024 edition will have both technical and poster sessions including invited and contributed talks. The presentations will be limited to 30 minutes for invited and 20 minutes for contributed talks including time for questions.

The oral and poster presentations will mainly cover topics related to high level waste glasses, spent nuclear fuel and ceramics tailored for Pu management in addition to other interdisciplinary topics.

There will be six conference sessions spread over three days and a poster session open for the entire duration of the event.
